Stone Shadows

2016

Stone Shadows is a large lumen print of a stone beach, recorded by way of the physical interaction between the natural elements and photographic paper. The slow exposure gathered time-based impressions of ancient sedimentary rock, the changing light, and the rise and fall of water levels from beneath the stones. All of this resulted in an image that embodies dimension, depth and the passage of time. The original unfixed print will continue to change over time once re-exposed to light, corresponding to the ever-shifting environment that created it.

This project was made possible with the generous support of the Manitoba Arts Council.

As a way to fix and preserve the impressions, I carefully documented the unfixed lumen print and transferred a life-size replica of the entire image to fabric. When suspended off the floor, the print can shift in ways which embody the undulating water levels that contributed to the making of the image.
